I read this immediately after the sort-of-modern-version of part of this tale in "The Lost Cyclist" in which a great deal of "Across Asia on a Bicycle" was reproduced. The writing style is definitely dated, but the depth of detail is quite good. If you are interested in what the Asian belt countries were like back when foreigners were just being allowed within the interiors of these countries this is a good read. It provides a really good understanding of the perils of traveling at the turn of the 19th century. Teamed with “The Lost Cyclist” the two books provide a real introspect of a time past.Product details

Across Asia on a bicycle Thomas Gaskell Allen William Lewis Sachtleben 9785518448247 Books Reviews
This book really disappointed me. I was hoping for an account of what riding a bicycle across Asia would be like around the end of the 19th century. What I got was more of a social studies read. The story is loosely jointed with rambling descriptions of side trips, dignitaries, and mobs of locals. We hear very little about the bicycles they rode. The theme of how amazed the locals would be when they came into each new place is repeated endlessly. I wanted to know how the bicycles performed, how they were maintained, how they dealt with weather. If you want to read a rather prismatic view of emerging cultures, this is for you. If you want to read about a bicycle adventure, skip it. After all the author says they only chose bicycles out of convenience. No passion here.

It is truly amazing to read the account of such an undertaking by bicycle in the late 1800's. It's a well-written and engaging travelogue.
A fast moving narrative, interesting and full of twists of fate. Two young men take on the world in bygone times, when nations allowed such things. Riders of today will wonder at the challenge - but the same lure that drives cross-country cycling today is certainly in these pages.
Had heard about this book a few years ago and wanted to get it after traveling in some of the areas they traveled in. It helped fill in some of the gaps in understanding what I saw / experienced from a historical perspective. Would definitely recommend. I only wish I had the guts those guys had.
What an incredible story these young men had to tell! The book picks up with the Asia part of their journey and while reading their accounts of the people and places they saw I was transported back to a time when all travel was "adventure" travel. Included is the account of their insane-by-today's-standards summit of Mt Ararat. This book is for cyclists and non-cyclists alike and is compelling reading - giving a world view and pre-World War perspective on the people of the middle and far east. These young men from America were the first to demonstrate the "safety" bicycle to the Asian people and may very well have sparked the common use of bicycles throughout the world.
Remember what time it was when reading this, some broad generalizations but still definitely a worthwhile read if you have since traveled through some of the same places. Personally interesting was reading through China travels, seeing what has stayed the same, specifically about the people from over a hundred years ago- visa problems, 'foreign devils' and always being asked your age. Some of the same experiences can still be had today.
Also it'd be better reading a version that has maps and pictures included, couldn't find them in this version.
